URGENT: A Southwest Airlines pilot explains why you will not hear anything about vaccine mandates from his union - and why Southwest has more flexibility than it admits to stand up to the White House
The pilot emailed following the first Southwest post today (and provided his SWA ID to prove his identity). He asked that I paraphrase the email.
Essentially, the union cannot organize or even acknowledge the sickout, because doing so would make it an illegal job action. Years ago, Southwest and its pilots had a rough negotiation, and the union would not even let the pilots internally discuss the possibility of working-to-rule (which would have slowed Southwest to a crawl).
But at the moment the pilots don’t even have to talk to each other about what they’re doing. The anger internally - not just among pilots but other Southwest workers - is enormous. The tough prior negotiations notwithstanding, Southwest has a history of decent labor relations, and workers believe the company should stand up for them against the mandate. Telling pilots in particular to comply or face termination has backfired.

Meanwhile, Southwest has more flexibility than it has acknowledged. Federal contracts represent about 3 percent of its revenue, but even the Biden administration CANNOT alter existing contracts (please note, I have not checked this, though it seems reasonable); Southwest is only at risk of losing future contracts.
This pilot believes that the fact that the airlines received $25 billion in no-strings-attached cash for “payroll support” last year (as well another $25 billion in loans) has made them particularly reluctant to stand up to the Biden administration. Southwest’s CEO, Gary Kelly, may be in an especially tough spot since he is the head of the airline lobbying group.

Finally: This pilot says he loves Southwest and finds the crisis painful but feels that if this is the only way Americans can stand up to these mandates, then let the chips fall.
Until this walkout the Covid mania felt like it was on a runaway train toward dictatorship. Mandates to work, travel, shop, etc. Mandates for kids. It felt inevitable.

I can tell you, as a retired flight attendant, I have worked a few "work to rule' slow downs, they ARE effective. A glass (when we used to have glass) breaks in the galley...can't just clean it up at the gate. No, no, rug has be changed out, maintenance has to come, someone has to sign-off logbook, flight is delayed, crew goes illegal, etc,,, this is how it works. You are following the strictest interpretation of the FAA rules. I am beyond THRILLED to see these pilots do this. Selfishly, I don't want to fly with a blood clotting pilot. Sudafed used to be one of the few "allowed" meds- now a shot with UNKOWN substances and short/long term effects are perfectly fine? Hard pass. Even though I worked for a competing airline and still have flight benefits, I will gladly join their picket line if they strike. And I am not at all pro-union. Bodily autonomy HAS to be the red line.
I for one really appreciate you doing so!!! And stand with you. I would much prefer to have a medical professional that is unvaccinated, who won't fall over dead from the jab while taking care of people, (possibly even during surgery)

Partly. Partly because flying one of these machines is a two person job. Especially in a high stress situation--precisely when the guy in the left seat strokes out.
I guess with covid drama no one is worried anymore about pilots' drinking on layovers and other problems. My Dad was a United Captain, one of my brothers, now dead of ALS, an American Captain. My Dad was a WWII Marine with true PTSD and I know he wasn't always careful about the bottle to throttle rule. And my poor brother was flying, without realizing it, with the early onset of the dementia that accompanies half of all ALS patients. There's a lot more concerning things to me than this damned Chinese plague when it comes to airline safety. I think we've all lost our minds.
I am only a lowly Private Pilot, albeit with a lot of hours, IFR, night, etc. My father was a WWII navigator, killed. Not his fault. Stepfather WWII flight engineer. He had two (three?) brothers WWII pilots. Grandfather was a pilot, owned a small airfield. Brother was Coast Guard helicopter search and rescue, after CG retirement a United pilot. Had a great uncle that designed and built an aircraft circa 1910--his aircraft was used to teach aeronautics by an Ohio university in that era. Another uncle that was a pilot, owned his own aircraft, before spending 32 months in the Pacific with the USMC. College roommate retired from USAIR. I hope his fondness for Coors abated.
Speaking from personal experience, flying actual IMC is a work load that is very marginal for one pilot. IFR in the LA airspace is really more than one person should be handling. Been there, done that. Too many times. Getting kicked around, constant vector changes, sky full of aluminum. It really is a two person job. Half an hour and my brain would be turning to mush.
I am not commercially rated, but I know that most transport aircraft require two pilots for work load reasons. There is a Citation model that can be flown single pilot (have a little time as right seat in one), but I doubt it extends to carrying paying passengers.
I agree that there are a lot of problems with pilots that are flying and shouldn't be. But, why should we add any more problems?
I wholly support pilots that don't want to be take on any further risks. They--as are the vast majority--are the ones we want in the cockpit.
Actually, planes today are mostly computerized & somewhat autonomous from pilots. They could be flown entirely as "drones" but a computer link, rather than human beings in the pilot's seat, is disconcerting to the passengers. Much like the Joe Dimentia "presidency", pilots are mostly a charade in today's commercial airlines world! BTW, many of today's "pilots" have zero real experience, other than graduating from an aviation school like Embry Riddle in Prescott, Az, & they become "proficient" in a simulator, not a real airplane cockpit.
And tugs should ALWAYS wait for the required safe distance before passing behind a taxiing aircraft. And cans should be carefully loaded, one weight-checked bag at a time. And... :-)

We need to get the children out of the schools until the school boards r willing to hear what the parents want for their children instead of the tyrannical government. I went through this when my son was younger. He never contracted chicken pox. I did not want him to get then vaccine. I was fortunate enough to have a doctor that listened to me. He signed a waver every year for us. And I know there are many out there that say I am foolish but again it was my choice for my son. And when he turned 18 it was his choice whether he wanted to get it. Ask your doctor, hopefully the will understand your view on the Covid19 vaccinations for young children.

May I suggest watching (re-watching) the movie "Darkest Hour" (about Churchill at the beginning of WW2)? I realize it's somewhat fictionalized and romanticized, but still very inspiring. She contacted SS, said there must have been a mistake--she had never paid into SS. She and her late husband had been independent ranchers, retired about 1940. Friend just flew from San Francisco to Boston. Alaska Air. Crew didn't show. Hours of delays. So, as you reported, American Airlines personnel (including Alaska Air) is doing it too. Thank God for these people.

I've said many times that if you crank up the cycles on the PCR test, you can find Covid-19 on my car's bumper and on my shoes. It's everywhere now and what they find isn't necessarily active Covid-19 or any variant.

If you're going to act like a police state, give people the right to show a negative PCR test. It won't hurt you. I get one every Monday morning before going to work. But....I do hear you on this.

One quick clip caught my attention, and it probably wouldn't have until I watched James Corbett's fantastic documentaries on Rockefeller medicine: the clip with the petroleum-based ingredients in the shot. The PCR tests are not very trustworthy. I favor aggressive therapeutic measures including ivermectin etc plus monoclonal antibody infusions for anyone who gets covid. Testing and vaccines are obviously failing.
I went to one testing center said I had no symptoms. My test there was negative. Maybe cycled 25x? I went to another, said I had 3 of the known symptoms...tested POSITIVE? Maybe was cycled to 40? Try it for yourself.
I'm just getting over covid and so is my husband. I think we caught it from our fully vaxxed Army son who was home on leave and out with buddies drinking a few nights before he left to go back to post. The first, PCR test didn't see it. A second at home antigen test didn't see and I had symptoms at that point. The next day a rapid antigen test at a pharmacy showed positive. I can only say, I think this must have been covid and not a flu, because of some of the weird systemic changes. I was having a rough time with thermal homeostasis (aka hot flashes). The covid seems to have got rid of them. That's no ordinary bug.

Your unintended consequence example is hypothetical; there is a very real unintended consequence from not pushing back against what the Southwests of the world are doing. Private airports don't only hit the wealthy - and just be careful what you wish for. There are GA pilots that use their own aircraft, pay the costs of fuel and take people to medical care they need but otherwise wouldn't get to. As a recently retired airline pilot, I know how much gut wrenching courage it takes to risk your career over something you believe in. Right now, these pilots (and other SWA staff, and the ATC controllers) are the beachhead in the fight to the death over our liberty and freedom as Americans. They are the equivalent of the Marines wading ashore under withering enemy fire. When I first heard of their counterattack, I literally jumped for joy and fist pumped the air! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have the deepest respect for their courage. Please let them know how much this means to their countrymen.
14 yr. SWA Captain here.. I feel totally betrayed by management who touts how much they "care" for their people. We all have lines in the sand and they have certainly crossed it. We stand for freedom of choice. If not now, when? If not us, who? This is our time, this our place! I don't condone job action.. but this will wake a lot of people up.

Back in the "old days" I flew on SWA a LOT and loved them for their frequent, inexpensive, low-frill flights to just about anywhere I wanted/needed to go.

I am one of the very few United Pilots that refused to be vaccinated. The rest of our pilots and union are either modern day Hitler Youth or too terrified to stand up for themselves. It is hugely encouraging to see SWA, AA and ATC people standing up for their rights!! If you stand together they will back down.

I’ve been a flight attendant for longer than the number of years I’d been alive when I got hired.
The Covid-era has been the worst of my otherwise wonderful career. I took as much time off as possible since the mask mandate was implemented because I couldn’t in good conscience enforce something I knew was completely ludicrous. I knew when the jab mandates came it would be the end of my career.
Many of us saw the writing on the wall and knew it wasn’t going to stop at masks, or tests or voluntary jabbing.
When Biden announced his 100+ employees mandate and then had the HHS Secretary pressure the legacy airline CEOs, I had trouble sleeping for days.
Today was the first day I actually felt hope, as friends from around the system (in both the airline circle and ATC) started spreading the word about what was happening.
At my airline, which shall remain unnamed to protect the innocent, over 70% of the ground staff are not vaccinated.
This resistance to tyranny will not stop with the pilots.
But the pilots led the way.
So from the bottom of my heart, I thank the pilots at Southwest. My entire career I have placed my trust in the pilots, to safely guide and steer us, and today they’ve also earned my deepest gratitude for helping to steer our entire country in the right direction.

My experience is just anecdote of course, but I've flown roughly 35 times since January 2020, the vast majority with Southwest. When the mask bullcrap started I bought a mask that says THIS IS DUMB. It is literally the ONLY mask I'll wear, and only when I have no choice.
I cannot count how many times I encountered a SWA pilot, captain, FA, or gate personnel who saw my mask and one way or another - either with a thumbs-up or a supporting comment in passing or full-blown conversation - expressed complete agreement with and support for the THIS IS DUMB message on my mask.
Again, just anecdote - but my impression is that there are FAR MORE of us out there than the Leftist totalitarians and the alphabet legacy media dare to admit. WE are the majority, and it's damned time we start flexing our muscles for freedom, IMO.
My first round of masking was actually MY GOVERNOR IS AN IDIOT, and I got lots of thumbs-up and positive comments from fellow air travelers on that one. I got the masks from AAFnation.com if that helps.

Just spent the afternoon in the ER with my son. I was asked to show my vax card and told them I didn’t have a vax card. They told me it was ok for ER but I wouldn’t be allowed in the main part of the hospital without it!! Thank god my son did not get admitted! This needs to stop! We all need to stand up, and yes this was the same hospital that fired me for refusing to vax! Respect to the pilots!

Dianne Feinstein recently introduced the “US Air Travel Safety Act” bill to the house.
It will require every passenger taking off from or landing in a US airport (even a crop dusting strip in a corn field) to either be vaccinated or show proof of a negative PCR COVID test (which will not even be approved by the FDA past the end of this year, because it cannot differentiated between cold/flu and this virus).
It is a stealth bill that will be amended to require vaccination once the PCR tests are phased out after the holidays.
If you value your ability to travel freely, you need to stand up for your rights now. The pilots and other airline professionals can’t do it alone.
Pilots like the individual who emailed you and all the other pilots at Southwest, along with the other employees who are standing up against the vaccine mandate, are heroes. I thank God that they have the courage to stand strong against this totalitarian and destructive oppression.

In Australia, my understanding is the truckers went on strike and brought everything to a halt (although this was heavily censored). The government quickly caved in and gave the truckers an exemption to the vaccines but then mandated them for everyone else! So let's hope this benefits us all and not just SW pilots when SW management (likely) capitulates.
I’m a trucker. Many other drivers are not really paying attention because the COVID restrictions have been very light on us since the beginning of this. Unless the 100 employee rule goes into effect, most companies won’t dare to impose vaccine mandates on us. I am aware of only one company mandates vaccines for their drivers Tyson (the chicken company). There may be others, but my point is that vaccine mandates aren’t a thing in this industry.
A driver with a clean record can quit his job Friday and have 10 companies blowing up his phone offering a job Monday morning.
It’s good for us now but it is a double edged sword in that we will eventually get forced to have to vaccine after the rest of the country falls.
The powers that be are not dumb, and are mostly leaving truckers alone for now so as to minimize resistance.

This action by the Southwest pilots is the best, most encouraging news I have heard in the last month or so. My hat is off to all the pilots courageous enough to take this stand against great opposition. It means a lot to so many of us.
This is what we all need to do! Masks are not preventing the spread of the virus, if anything, it is unhealthy for the healthy to wear them.
We all need to take a stand! This is not North Korea. We have a right to choose and a right to stand up for ourselves. I can tell you, as a retired flight attendant, I have worked a few "work to rule' slow downs, they ARE effective. A glass (when we used to have glass) breaks in the galley...can't just clean it up at the gate. No, no, rug has be changed out, maintenance has to come, someone has to sign-off logbook, flight is delayed, crew goes illegal, etc,,, this is how it works. You are following the strictest interpretation of the FAA rules. I am beyond THRILLED to see these pilots do this. Selfishly, I don't want to fly with a blood clotting pilot. Sudafed used to be one of the few "allowed" meds- now a shot with UNKOWN substances and short/long term effects are perfectly fine? Hard pass. Even though I worked for a competing airline and still have flight benefits, I will gladly join their picket line if they strike. And I am not at all pro-union. Bodily autonomy HAS to be the red line.

I guess with covid drama no one is worried anymore about pilots' drinking on layovers and other problems. My Dad was a United Captain, one of my brothers, now dead of ALS, an American Captain. My Dad was a WWII Marine with true PTSD and I know he wasn't always careful about the bottle to throttle rule. And my poor brother was flying, without realizing it, with the early onset of the dementia that accompanies half of all ALS patients. There's a lot more concerning things to me than this damned Chinese plague when it comes to airline safety. I think we've all lost our minds.
I am only a lowly Private Pilot, albeit with a lot of hours, IFR, night, etc. My father was a WWII navigator, killed. Not his fault. Stepfather WWII flight engineer. He had two (three?) brothers WWII pilots. Grandfather was a pilot, owned a small airfield. Brother was Coast Guard helicopter search and rescue, after CG retirement a United pilot. Had a great uncle that designed and built an aircraft circa 1910--his aircraft was used to teach aeronautics by an Ohio university in that era. Another uncle that was a pilot, owned his own aircraft, before spending 32 months in the Pacific with the USMC. College roommate retired from USAIR. I hope his fondness for Coors abated.
Speaking from personal experience, flying actual IMC is a work load that is very marginal for one pilot. IFR in the LA airspace is really more than one person should be handling. Been there, done that. Too many times. Getting kicked around, constant vector changes, sky full of aluminum. It really is a two person job. Half an hour and my brain would be turning to mush.
I am not commercially rated, but I know that most transport aircraft require two pilots for work load reasons. There is a Citation model that can be flown single pilot (have a little time as right seat in one), but I doubt it extends to carrying paying passengers.
I agree that there are a lot of problems with pilots that are flying and shouldn't be. But, why should we add any more problems?
I wholly support pilots that don't want to be take on any further risks. They--as are the vast majority--are the ones we want in the cockpit.
Actually, planes today are mostly computerized & somewhat autonomous from pilots. They could be flown entirely as "drones" but a computer link, rather than human beings in the pilot's seat, is disconcerting to the passengers. Much like the Joe Dimentia "presidency", pilots are mostly a charade in today's commercial airlines world! BTW, many of today's "pilots" have zero real experience, other than graduating from an aviation school like Embry Riddle in Prescott, Az, & they become "proficient" in a simulator, not a real airplane cockpit.

May I suggest watching (re-watching) the movie "Darkest Hour" (about Churchill at the beginning of WW2)? I realize it's somewhat fictionalized and romanticized, but still very inspiring. The PCR tests are not very trustworthy. I favor aggressive therapeutic measures including ivermectin etc plus monoclonal antibody infusions for anyone who gets covid. Testing and vaccines are obviously failing.

A PCR test failed to detect my case of covid.
I went to one testing center said I had no symptoms. My test there was negative. Maybe cycled 25x? I went to another, said I had 3 of the known symptoms...tested POSITIVE? Maybe was cycled to 40? Try it for yourself.
I'm just getting over covid and so is my husband. I think we caught it from our fully vaxxed Army son who was home on leave and out with buddies drinking a few nights before he left to go back to post. The first, PCR test didn't see it. A second at home antigen test didn't see and I had symptoms at that point. The next day a rapid antigen test at a pharmacy showed positive. I can only say, I think this must have been covid and not a flu, because of some of the weird systemic changes. I was having a rough time with thermal homeostasis (aka hot flashes). The covid seems to have got rid of them. That's no ordinary bug.

He or she is kind to the "lower classes," has no desire to rule over others, to dictate where they can live and where they can travel, what medical procedures they have to take in their bodies, what they have to wear to cover their faces like slaves, what speech they can say or writing they can publish without censorship, correct? Then that person in your family is not part of the "ruling class". It's rather obvious to those who pay attention as to who are the people with great wealth and in positions of power who wish to enslave others. I expect that the majority of those types are psychopaths. Their lust for power and control over others, and their use of deception is often manifestly obvious.
I would imagine that the FBOs of these private airports know who are the billionaire ruling class types using their facilities -- it's obvious by the jets they fly. A little selective "oopsies" that can't be tracked to any one person would be appreciated by the oppressed freedom-fighters when the right time comes.

As a recently retired airline pilot, I know how much gut wrenching courage it takes to risk your career over something you believe in. Right now, these pilots (and other SWA staff, and the ATC controllers) are the beachhead in the fight to the death over our liberty and freedom as Americans. They are the equivalent of the Marines wading ashore under withering enemy fire. When I first heard of their counterattack, I literally jumped for joy and fist pumped the air! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have the deepest respect for their courage. Please let them know how much this means to their countrymen.
14 yr. SWA Captain here.. I feel totally betrayed by management who touts how much they "care" for their people. We all have lines in the sand and they have certainly crossed it. We stand for freedom of choice. If not now, when? If not us, who? This is our time, this our place! I don't condone job action.. but this will wake a lot of people up.

I am one of the very few United Pilots that refused to be vaccinated. The rest of our pilots and union are either modern day Hitler Youth or too terrified to stand up for themselves. I’ve been a flight attendant for longer than the number of years I’d been alive when I got hired.
The Covid-era has been the worst of my otherwise wonderful career. I took as much time off as possible since the mask mandate was implemented because I couldn’t in good conscience enforce something I knew was completely ludicrous. I knew when the jab mandates came it would be the end of my career.
Many of us saw the writing on the wall and knew it wasn’t going to stop at masks, or tests or voluntary jabbing.
When Biden announced his 100+ employees mandate and then had the HHS Secretary pressure the legacy airline CEOs, I had trouble sleeping for days.
Today was the first day I actually felt hope, as friends from around the system (in both the airline circle and ATC) started spreading the word about what was happening.
At my airline, which shall remain unnamed to protect the innocent, over 70% of the ground staff are not vaccinated.
This resistance to tyranny will not stop with the pilots.
But the pilots led the way.
So from the bottom of my heart, I thank the pilots at Southwest. My entire career I have placed my trust in the pilots, to safely guide and steer us, and today they’ve also earned my deepest gratitude for helping to steer our entire country in the right direction.

My experience is just anecdote of course, but I've flown roughly 35 times since January 2020, the vast majority with Southwest. When the mask bullcrap started I bought a mask that says THIS IS DUMB. It is literally the ONLY mask I'll wear, and only when I have no choice.
I cannot count how many times I encountered a SWA pilot, captain, FA, or gate personnel who saw my mask and one way or another - either with a thumbs-up or a supporting comment in passing or full-blown conversation - expressed complete agreement with and support for the THIS IS DUMB message on my mask.
Again, just anecdote - but my impression is that there are FAR MORE of us out there than the Leftist totalitarians and the alphabet legacy media dare to admit. WE are the majority, and it's damned time we start flexing our muscles for freedom, IMO.

Just spent the afternoon in the ER with my son. I was asked to show my vax card and told them I didn’t have a vax card. They told me it was ok for ER but I wouldn’t be allowed in the main part of the hospital without it!! Thank god my son did not get admitted! This needs to stop! We all need to stand up, and yes this was the same hospital that fired me for refusing to vax! Respect to the pilots!

Dianne Feinstein recently introduced the “US Air Travel Safety Act” bill to the house.
It will require every passenger taking off from or landing in a US airport (even a crop dusting strip in a corn field) to either be vaccinated or show proof of a negative PCR COVID test (which will not even be approved by the FDA past the end of this year, because it cannot differentiated between cold/flu and this virus).
It is a stealth bill that will be amended to require vaccination once the PCR tests are phased out after the holidays.
If you value your ability to travel freely, you need to stand up for your rights now. The pilots and other airline professionals can’t do it alone.
Pilots like the individual who emailed you and all the other pilots at Southwest, along with the other employees who are standing up against the vaccine mandate, are heroes. I thank God that they have the courage to stand strong against this totalitarian and destructive oppression.

In Australia, my understanding is the truckers went on strike and brought everything to a halt (although this was heavily censored). The government quickly caved in and gave the truckers an exemption to the vaccines but then mandated them for everyone else! So let's hope this benefits us all and not just SW pilots when SW management (likely) capitulates.
I’m a trucker. Many other drivers are not really paying attention because the COVID restrictions have been very light on us since the beginning of this. Unless the 100 employee rule goes into effect, most companies won’t dare to impose vaccine mandates on us. I am aware of only one company mandates vaccines for their drivers Tyson (the chicken company). There may be others, but my point is that vaccine mandates aren’t a thing in this industry.
A driver with a clean record can quit his job Friday and have 10 companies blowing up his phone offering a job Monday morning.
It’s good for us now but it is a double edged sword in that we will eventually get forced to have to vaccine after the rest of the country falls.
The powers that be are not dumb, and are mostly leaving truckers alone for now so as to minimize resistance.

This action by the Southwest pilots is the best, most encouraging news I have heard in the last month or so. My hat is off to all the pilots courageous enough to take this stand against great opposition. It means a lot to so many of us.
This is what we all need to do! Masks are not preventing the spread of the virus, if anything, it is unhealthy for the healthy to wear them.
We all need to take a stand! This is not North Korea. We have a right to choose and a right to stand up for ourselves. They are narcissists who have created this mess and now gaslighting us to confuse us. It is so obvious what the government is trying to do. We can not let them control us. We can not let them separate us or manipulate us into turning against each other. That’s what they want. Vaccinated or not, we are all humans. We have to stick together and be a United front. The more we fight back and stick together, the harder it will be for them to take over!
