They have a PILOT shortage. Period. It's happening frequently. If they can't get a qualified flight crew "just in time", you're out of luck. Happened to my wife 10 days ago at LAX!

The federal employee mandate was just upheld. Since pilots are under FAA regulation I would bet they just walked out. There are 10 pilots involved in a law suit challenging mandates and masks etc.

I’m retired from American Airlines after 35 years. When I left several years ago, just the slightest change in fuel could alter the course of an airline overnight, or a grounding of a jet, or a pilot picket line. But today there are so many multiple conflicts in the industry, I feel that they are overwhelmed with problems. Add to that mandates, air rage, zero meals when flying coast to coast. I wonder if they aren’t dissolving before our eyes. It’s tragic and mostly all preventable under a better political climate.

As a JetBlue Pilot, I would like to apologize. You have kept me sane the past 1.5 years and I loved Pandemia also. Please reconsider, we are short of all employees, not just pilots. No excuse, just working hard to get staffed up. No one wants to work since they get paid more to stay home on the sofa! Let’s Go Brandon!

Alex you need to fly private like Hunter Biden

I for one am glad you’re venting. People need to know. America is a failed experiment. This is one more nail in the coffin. This flight situation is bad everywhere and they’re lying to us as to why.

Different times demand different choices. I refuse to fly domestically unless for emergency. My last flight was in 2019. If enough people make choices like mine, hopefully it will reduce air traffic and help resolve what you are experiencing.....or not. For me, seeing the country and being a road warrior is not a hardship. I detest being sandwiched in between halitosis and obesity inside a cylindrical Petri dish. Costs me time but helps my serenity.

You can stop flying JetBlue, but you’ll most likely experience similar events at other airlines. Covid brought many early retirements, and airlines are trying to do very close to the same amount of flying today that they did pre covid, except with far fewer pilots. As an airline pilot who recently went through training to fly a different type of airplane (typically one month of time for this training) I can tell you, it’s not just pilots that are short staffed and underworked. Instructors are overworked due the attempt to hire as many pilots as soon as possible. Mechanics are short staffed. Flight attendants are short staffed. This doesn’t even speak to ramp workers, schedulers, gate agents, dispatchers (who handle the flight planning), etc. Then you add in the shortage of contractors that do cleaning, catering, fueling and cancellations are just going to happen unless you reduce the number of flights for sale. You can do this by raising ticket prices to cut demand, but then you’ll probably have congressional hearings over the high prices. It’s all insanity. The airlines are trying to hire for all of these positions, but specifically for a pilot, you are looking at up to 3 months to go from new hire to fully ready to fly an airplane with paying passengers. Many of the pilots now being hired at larger carriers, (JetBlue, American, southwest, United, delta, Alaska etc) are coming from the regional airlines. And those regional airlines simply cannot find enough replacements due to the fact that there isn’t a big enough interest in young people becoming pilots, mainly due to the huge cost to get the training, and the historically low entry level pay. It just doesn’t make a lot of financial sense. Also there aren’t as many military pilots as there used to be. The pilot shortage has been an issue for awhile, but the resurgence in demand post COVID has magnified it. I could go on in much more detail, but don’t have the time.

The pilot prob had heart palpitations.

I get it. But at least you GET to fly.

For those of us in Canada who remain untainted by the experimental clot shots, we are unable to board any aircraft IN OUR OWN COUNTRY!

I guess Jet Blue can have 98% vax compliance if unvaxxed pilots (and staff) quit. #Math

My wife and I are in travel management. It’s not just this carrier. It is ALL of them. Every single one will claim that COVID has them behind the number of pilots and attendants they need. What a crock. It is all about butts in seats on most profitable flights.

Same thing happening everywhere. All the vaxed are getting sick over and over. Constant colds flus backaches. On and on.

Since JetBlue is based in NYC, I thought it was likely they had a vaccine mandate - their website says "The vast majority of our crewmembers have already received the COVID-19 vaccine." I would think that is true of pilots. But based on so much that I have been reading, people who had the vaccines are having numerous serious side effects and increased risk of premature death. A while back I read about an airline that was known to have had deaths among multiple pilots, unusual since pilots have to be in good health to fly, and these pilots did have good health until dying unexpectedly somewhat after receiving vaccines. Could it be that vaccinated pilots at JetBlue have had vaccine related adverse effects that have kept them from flying? I have patients who have become disabled after receiving the vaccine. There has also been concern as to whether a vaccinated pilot may have a heart attack or stroke in the air, since the vaccines are associated with blood clots which can in turn cause heart attacks or strokes. Southwest pilots protested the vaccine mandates and pretty much won, but most airlines have coerced the vaccine, making the skies less safe in my opinion. I don't plan to fly anywhere for the forseeable future, for numerous reasons. The government could change what they require for Covid at any time, and there is no way to know what specifically will be required if I book now for a flight 2 months from now - like what will be required in the way of masking, texting, vaxxing, etc. - plus who knows about the pilots? Since the pilots have been required to vax and many have. In my opinion, driving is good, and unless the relatives are in Alaska or Hawaii, driving is possibly the best option. I don't have any plans to travel out of the country until things settle down a whole lot more, and perharps never, too crazy.

It’s probably due to staffing. It’s a huge problem in the hospitality industry right now. This happened last weekend on many different airlines

Same thing is happening in the UK. They’re saying crew/ airport staff shortages due to covid but we stopped free testing here last week and tbh I’m not buying it. I think it’s more likely that flights were sold at prices that now aren’t worth them taking off for because fuel is short supply/ too expensive. Also it’s part of the bigger ‘WEF’ plan. We are also having fuel shortages at the pumps in the UK because of “climate protesters” blocking the tanks leaving the depots. Again I think there’s something fishy going on and wouldn’t be surprised if the protesters are crisis actors or it’s a set up. It’s all about disruption and the dismantling of society. Watch out for the power cuts this fall/ winter and food shortages.

In Boston today, they were using facial recognition devices for flights to Ireland and no tickets on phones, only airport -issued paper tickets were valid, a last-minute proviso for the flight. Border agents were present. Is there something afoot we're not yet aware of?

This is very common w Jet blue recently happened to my brother in law and family last weekend. It also happened to a friend a month ago and her pilot mentioned issues with 5G being part of it. Something along the lines of certain planes can’t operate without apparatus that they cant use due to the new 5G bandwidth they released in late January. Its more than this though must be a pilot shortage. So sorry hope you can salvage your trip or book another one.

JetBlue is getting ready to acquire Spirit Airlines so cancellations, delays, and in air fistfights will soon be the norm.

I was on my way to be at my dying father’s beside in 2015. Flight was delayed 5 hours because flight crew was on the way from LA to Newark. I begged them to find me another flight and they basically told me to pound sand. I said goodbye to my dying father while my sister held the phone to his ear. He died several minutes later. I hate all the airlines and I fly as little as possible.

All jokes aside, pilot’s salary/benefits/quality of life have been on a downward slope for decades. Pilot training is expensive and you usually start with the smaller airlines and they pay garbage. The military is short thousands of pilots so they are paying retention bonuses - it’s harder to poach pilots from the military- that’s been the airline’s go to for years - it’s not available right now.

I’m an airline pilot and unfortunately it’s happening to all the major airlines. It’s a much larger picture to see. The airlines are incredibly short staffed. Crew Scheduling, gate agents, ground personnel, pilots, Flight Attendants, vaccine mandates, etc. The pay is simply not there especially for the entry level jobs. Our crew scheduling is 50/50 at home still with the option to return to work. You will call them and have 96 min hold times just to figure out your schedule. Then hear little kids in the background crying and dogs barking.. gate agents quitting mid shift because they simply don’t get paid enough to be berated by a passenger because they have to pay to check their bag that doesn’t fit. They push the pilots schedule so hard that if there is a minor delay they run out of flight duty time and or fatigue out. I’m not making any excuses for the airlines just trying to give some insight.

Get used to it. We're in a new world. You probably saw 2,500 flights were canceled the other day on SW. I don't foresee flying ... maybe ever again, but I'm old ... unless an absolute necessity. I know not everyone can do that. Sympathies.

Alaska Airlines here in Seattle is having the same issue...I wish we had a functioning media that might ask exactly HOW MANY pilots just flunked their physicals and have been grounded? The jab mandates started last fall so everyone would be coming up just about now for their re-quals. "Funny" how many airlines are "suddenly" experiencing pilot shortages...

Its not justJetblue. This happened to my daughter on United last week. Quite expensive to rebook on another airline to get her where she needed to be too. I suspect the airlines are being paid off to cancel flights. Its all part of the new normal/ great reset. Make travel difficult, expensive and unpredictable so the serfs stay local, stay home, stay small and most importantly controllable .

Dude I was at Logan on Thursday waiting for my Jet Blue flight to Laguardia. After 7 hours of changing gates, getting on the plane sitting for an hour, taxing, taxing back getting off, I cancelled the 4 day trip. I was told by a JetBlue employee helping me that they had no crew for the flights.

They canceled my flight Sunday morning 5 minutes before scheduled departure. They said the crew wasn’t there. It was a 7 AM flight and I got up at 4:30. It would have been nice had they announced at some point before 6:55 that they didn’t have a crew to fly the plane. They claimed bad weather so they didn’t have to pay for a hotel or additional flights. All they gave me was a $100 credit after I spent $1,100 to get home (and I got home 36 hours late). There was no apology except for an email from the CEO this week. I will never fly them again

All the airlines are doing this to save fuel. Now, if the plane isn’t completely full you may see a cancellation.

My son is a pilot. You're dealing with fewer pilots: that were furloughed last year, found other jobs and stayed there; many more retiring as they are simply sick of the BS; short of flight attendants due to crappy pay; short of gate agents due to crappy pay, short of mechanics. So routes are being eliminated, or scaled back big tine. Soon they will have more pilots and crews, and more planes back in service, just in time for the prices to skyrocket due to rising fuel costs, so fewer travelers...

Longing for the good 'ol days, we should bring back the Eastern Shuttle model of jet travel. Eastern had hourly departures from Boston to NY and you would literally walk on the plane without a ticket. Tickets were sold while in flight. If you got to the plane and it was full, they would add service on the half-hour to catch up.

This kind of model works because the customer expectations are met and not inflated.

It is like getting a bad meal on Southwest. You are never disappointed.

It seems the best way to plan a pleasant life at this time is to depend on public transportation as little as possible. I feel for the sister who didn't travel because she felt "called" (my word) to raising her kids. Bravo to this wonderful woman. What a change from the people like President Obama who said years ago, and I paraphrase, " I would be furious if someone got my daughter pregnant and she didn't have the chance to have an abortion." I'll look it up and get the exact quote. To the beautiful sister/mother, you didn't travel and your kids felt your love for all those years. I so admire your beautiful choice. I drive til I get tired, then I do the 'navy "power snooze" in the car and drive some more. Now I'm thinking of taking up camping; how I love the US National Parks. Thank you President Teddi Roosevelt!

This is going on in the background across the airline industry. Airlines are selling seats on flights that they can't possibly operate. They do this every day. There should be a civil fine for this kind of behavior.

When you look at the number of daily cancelations across the country, on many days, hundreds of flights don't go. Mechanical cancellations, weather, and security are good excuses. All are rare. Airport congestion, route congestion, lack of staff, etc. These are poor excuses, and they are predictable.
