As someone from flyover country, I feel like there are some US cities that should just be kicked out of the Union. And if not the Union, they should be their own states and stop holding the rest of us hostage to their corrupt idiocy.
I believe this is starting to happen, although not quite as dramatically as is often envisioned. The US Constitution gives each state a lot of independence as to how to run its affairs, and the red states haven't been following the blue ones down the path of authoritarian socialism. As the gap between them grows, more and more folks are moving to red states due to lower taxes and less intrusive government. I can see the governments of blue states beginning to worry about their poor performance and unpopularity, even to the point of proposing so-called "exit taxes" on people who sell their homes to move to another state.
Yes, except their solution to this potential crisis is to import and sustain a bunch of non-citizens, rely on the federal government to help pay for their upkeep, count them in the census population (a modern day 3/5 compromise) and let them vote so they keep their power.
