Grew up with Squaw Valley, Lake Placid, bobsledding, curling and Canadian hockey. The Winter Olympics showed the world that Canada rocked. Never supported athletic boycotts but this year is different. The only athletes who should win a gold medal this year are the TRUCKERS. They went uphill, did a triple lutz and landed in truckistan with a perfect 10

I'm Canadian and consider the Miracle On Ice the greatest moment I've watched. And we Canadians have seen our fair share of great hockey games and moments: Summit Series of '72, Habs vs. the CCCP 1975, Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens dynasties, Canada/Soviet Union 1987 (and '84) at the Canada Cup, World Juniors show downs with the Soviets/Russians, endless victories at all levels including the Olympics etc. But that Team USA win still sends shivers. People probably still don't get what they pulled off there. It was like three Goliaths against one David. The Soviets were artistic-militarized machines. They were bloody amazing. I visited the arena in Lake Placid - I swear you can still feel it shaking. Now we're entering a golden age of USA hockey it would appear. Ok, I stopped editing. Promise.

I'm a life-long (well, almost) hockey player and fan and I was floored when I read this. I was particularly nauseated by Jake Chelios's - son of hockey great Chris Chelios - rationalization for playing for China's national team. How far we have fallen.

The Olympics have been politicized since Hitler attempted to turn the 1936 Berlin Olympics into a celebration of Nazism. We all remember Jesse Owens, the black power salute in 1968, the PLO attack on the Israelis in Munich, the 1980 Moscow boycott, the 1984 L.A. counter-boycott, and so on.

The reason why the 'Miracle on Ice' was so meaningful is because it occurred at time when American prestige was being battered and was in decline by fall-out from Vietnam, Watergate, the Carter presidency, inflation, the fall of the Shah, revolutions in Central America and Africa, the hostage crisis, and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

The Red Army team was the best in the world with Tretiak, Fetisov, Larianov, Kharlamov, and Makarov The U.S. team were a bunch of college kids drawn from the vastly inferior U.S. hockey program. By all measures it still ranks as one of the greatest upsets in sports (unless you believe the Russian version that they threw the game against the U.S. to get back at notoriously tyrannical coach Viktor Tikhinov. Check out the brilliant documentary 'Red Army' for the Russian version of what happened).

Watching American athletes playing for the Chinese national team demonstrates how cynical, corrupt, overtly mercenary, and ultimately pointless the Olympics have become. I won't be surprised if the 2028 Olympic national teams are replaced by corporate teams - Team Pfizer, Team Amazon, Team Huawei, Team AliBaba, etc.

Expand full comment

I think the national team is made up of six Canadians, a couple of Americans (including Chris Chelios's son - would love to know how that happened) and a Russian.

Expand full comment

Don't care how much you like sports, or even any of the athletes, please do not watch and give any ratings cash to this. There have been absolute covid and other seasonal outbreaks IN the area where the Olympics are before anyone arrived. But of course China will blame the athletes and anybody who arrived there for bringing it in to China. All countries should have refused to go.

YES! I'm American and remember being at girl scout camp hearing the Americans beat Russia!!! A lot of people forget they still had to beat Finland for the gold. Kurt Schlicter joked in one of his books about the "Red Sox" becoming the "Rainbow Sox". Does not see like satire as of late.

It has worked on lots of people.

That is the one sport where the gold medalists look like middle aged dads. So that one is kind of awesome.

If I hadn't read it in this Substack, I honestly would not have even realized the Olympics start today.

Some other network should show the 1980 U.S./Russia game on a loop. I bet it would draw more viewers than this year's sham in Beijing.

Funny how the media is failing on all fronts: Netfilx misses earnings, MSM ratings in the trash can, no one going to movies, FaceMeta imploding, and sports coverage cratering. You'd think they would get the *nudge* the public is giving them and stop the propagandizing, but no.

Who comes to the rescue in "The Martian"? The benevolent Chinese. Who did they kill off in the Avenger movies (all the adult white American males) and who were they replaced with? (not adult white males)

Hollywood has been hard at work, I mean hard at woke.

I saw what they were doing to athletes that tested positive.. what they have to put up with for that alone could not be worth it. 2 PCR tests a day? You're bound to get false positives. Probably high Ct as well. Then locking the away from olympic village. Unreal. I won't be watching.

Swab has ON IT Ethylene Oxide, known as a heavy metal CANCER/FERTILITY KILLER. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/ExZe0anXAAYqqf5.jpg

Expand full comment

Ethylene Oxide or EtO is not a metal nor does it contain any metals. It is a gas that diffuses back out of the sterilization pouch or packaging through permeable paper or an polyolefin non-woven (think Tyvek). Any heavy metal could be in the sterilization indicator ink on the packaging. Many sterilization packaging products from Asia use lead in their indicator ink (it's cheap) whereas US and European manufacturers eliminated the lead in the early 2000's.

Olympics, United Nations, NATO: decrepit and corrupted. It's as if any and all cross-national institutions naturally age out this way.

As a kid growing up in the 70's and 80's ,I would get excited for every Olympics but after decades of scandal, lack of principles regarding host nations and just absolute greed from all around, I can't bring myself to watch one minute of it.I am done with the Olympics and don't support it or its grifters in any way.

Back when Wide World of Sports was on and it meant something.

I'd already lost interest by the time they started letting Pro athletes in the games, but that move was the last shovel full of dirt on the grave.

The thrill of Victory...and the Agony of defeat! I can still see that skiier flying through the air!

I used to absolutely love the Olympics. It has now been completely corrupted, like everything else, by corporations and social justice agendas. So sad. Another thing is, the coverage here focuses so much on the U.S. teams and hardly shows anyone else (I'm referring to the U.S. women's gymnastics team particularly). That sh*t with Simone Biles was a joke. Some other girl would've been happy to take her place on the team, but instead she gets to go, quits on her team, and then is lauded as a hero for doing so?? That was the last nail in the coffin for me.

I completely forgot about that. I don't have enough ram for the important stuff, I flush all of that WoJo shit as soon as it happens. Just another reason it sucks.

Used to really look forward to the Olympics, won’t be watching a second of this one.

I liked to watch the opening ceremony to see the outfits of the athletes. This year, nope, never again plus all the outfits are made in China. Wonder if they'll have any prison striped outfits?

I used to watch every event in the Olympics. No more. I'll only be watching USA curling. I feel sorry for our athletes who have put so much effort into preparation for this world-stage event. Watching these Olympics is equal to supporting China. I can't do that.

Well did you see what Pelosi said about athletes shouldn't protest there because of what the government of China might possibly do to them? Why the fuck would we even send our athletes there then.

Here's something for you all to think about: I posted on FB I wasn't going to watch the Olympics. Friends affirmed they weren't, either. One asked why not because- and this is crucial- she only watches the local (I mean local cable provider's ) newscast. So I explained to her why. She came back and said "Oh. They just talked about it. I had no idea." THAT, peeps, is why America is in trouble. The close-minded, bubble living people have no clue what's going on about anything, anywhere, at anytime.

The Olympics? Haven't watched them in 40 years. Nowadays, you can't tell the girls from the boys and it's all a woke joke. I can probably find the reruns of the Greek-Sparta games from 1,000 years ago on some channel since you get about 874 these days on cable.

AMEN! I stopped watching any game called by Cris Collinsworth because of that B.S. His incessant liberal tripe drove me up the wall. So I stopped watching. Then I stopped watching the NFL, MLB, and NBA altogether. NCAA Football is about the only real sport I still watch and the woketards are coming for it next. The only way we win is if we dont watch it.
