Indy bookstores, or at least ours, are not places of mental adventure the way they were at one time. They are places where you need to be double vaxxed, boostered, Omicroned, and wear two masks just to buy Ibram X. Kendri. I think most of them have reeducation closets for people who want to think.

Expand full comment

Oh yeah. The local bookstore in my city 'proudly requires masks and enforces capacity limits' while the rest of the city has moved on. I mean - why would I go there now? Why at all?

Expand full comment

To the places that 'proudly require masks and enforce capacity limits' while the rest of the world has moved on... what I say to them is GOOD LUCK. I will take my dollars elsewhere and NOT fill their cash registers. Let them go out of business while they continue to virtue signal and appeal to karens.

Expand full comment

Capacity limits is a good sign here. It means no vaccine id

Expand full comment

A good sign is when they don't require a mask, a vaccine ID, or some low capacity limit at all -- as in the old normal. Not the "new normal" the old normal, you know, where everyone didn't lose their mind.

A little act of defiance I enjoy is to take a stack of books and move them to a prominent place in the store. Sometimes I accidentally displace things like Dreams of My Father or Becoming. Can’t help it.

I do the same! I order at least 3 copies of books that are suppressed ie. Plandemic, Pandemia and only by 2, then they’re stuck w at least one copy. We have a local bookstore that tried to tell me I couldn’t order certain books. That started me on a mission…

Mostly I just casually stroll past the display of featured books and nonchalantly turn them around so the titles can't be seen.

In Target, I make sure to turn around all the white hate and Obama books which are always at the front no matter how long they've been out.

Unfortunately, that's one of the public protests I can seem to muster. 🤷‍♀️

Target is the worst. I used to be such a huge Target shopper. I haven’t been there in two years. That would have been unimaginable back in the day because a Sunday Target run was my happy place

We escaped LA 3 years ago & moved to SD to be near 8 grandchildren. The straw that broke the camels back when we retired was the realization we could no longer use the bike path in Venice to spend the day with the grandkids. I experienced the same thing earlier today on this thread. I too was suspicious about what was causing this.

Expand full comment

This may seem wildly off-topic, but I believe there are deep connections most people don't want to even contemplate.

Several years ago if you searched for the word "Bible" on Amazon Canada (but not Amazon US) the second result returned was the Satanic Bible. There are thousands of Christian bibles for sale on Amazon in Canada, but this was what they showed to shoppers. There is no way this was not intentional. The number of people actually buying that book is miniscule, so it was promoted for other reasons. I haven't tried this search recently so not sure if it is still the case.
