“another possibility is that Xi and the Chinese leadership in Beijing are using Covid to clamp down on Shanghai, which is more liberal and Western-facing than the Chinese capital. China has carried out purges of Shanghai officials before, including the city’s chief prosecutor in 2018.”

this is exactly it. Shanghai is more liberal, more educated, wealthy and many have experience more open (at least relatively) societies of the west.

this is being done to ensure obedience. the way jan 6 insurrectionist are kept in prison with no arraignment more than two year later. in the same way USAG Garland labels parents at school board meetings domestic terrorists. in the same way the DOJ and FBI raided Project Veritas over a fucking diary. in the same way medical boards are witch hunting doctors who don’t toe the CDC/NIH line- ‘quick and devastating takes downs’ not only have the effect of silencing those who would oppose you, but also those paying attention.

I strongly recommend for those having time, the books by Jung Chang: Mao the untold story, and Three Swans. She lived through much of the Mao era before getting out in the 70s. Three Swans is about three generations in her family: her grandmother, mother, and herself. Many appalling things were revealed. One that stuck in my mind was about her father. People worked 6 days a week and had communist indoctrination on the 7th day. Her father was a total believer in communism, following everything to the letter. Then, he was imprisoned and tortured during a purge. That opened their eyes.

She also said that during the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution, she put people in only two categories: those who would persecute people to save their own skin, and those who wouldn’t.

Worldwide ideological derangement, seen in societies immersed in hyper-individualistic, socially isolating electronic devices. It's a double whammy of psychologically crippling addiction and social isolation. The old drugs were addicting, but not necessarily socially isolating. The derangement and disruption is coming from collectivists, particularly elites, the ordained middle managers of community development. You can have one-party system run solely by the most liberal of democrats (collectivists), but if the everyday social dynamic is mass entrapment in hyper-individualism and social isolation, you effectively have two polar ideological extremes living side-by-side, one in the political realm, the other in the social realm. The result is ideological derangement in the very forces that hold the power. This is a dangerous situation, not just for China. The drug that's destroying us is addictive personal electronic entertainment devices of all kinds engrossing all ages groups. This is the right-wing (individualistic) nemesis they know exists but refuse to see.

I agree. The more I think about it, the more ridiculous it all is. All the evidence and common sense shows that you can’t stop a virus. You really can’t even slow it down. Everything we did made the pandemic worse than it would have been if we let it run it’s coarse. The only question is whether it was intentional and malicious or incompetence and cowardice. Probably a horrible combo. Either way, the most frightening revelation is that most people went along with it, including doctors and scientists. People were willing to throw away their freedom and everyone else’s because of irrational fear for virus they likely weren’t at risk for. At no point did they start to even ask questions about the nonstop propaganda, the creepy announcements in stores, the stickers on the floor for 6 feet apart, the ridiculous sanitizing for an airborne virus, the refusal to allow medical experts to repurpose drugs for treatment or even allow early treatment, but taking new untested medical treatments and infusions was rational and the right thing to do? Demonizing people and refusing them service for not wearing a useless mask. And that is just a tiny fraction of the foolishness. I will never understand the level of crazy I have witnessed in the last 2+ years.

Americans in general, myself included for some time, are often woefully under educated about the absurdities that have taken place under the CCP.

In the Great Leap Forward, Mao declared sparrows an enemy of the people because they ate grain. He ordered the death of all sparrows. The Chinese enthusiastically went about killing damn near every bird in China.

They neglected to think through the fact birds eat bugs and bugs eat crops, too. Their crops were devastated and the resulting famines incomprehensible bad.

Therr were many other absurdities that just boggle the mind.

It's about power and control. Xi needs to retain the Mandate of Heaven and not show any weakness. The chosen path to fight the virus will be followed, cost what it may. There is an article in the Washington Post from March 3, 2020 that explains it well:

Ancient Chinese doctrine has it that when heaven is unhappy with the emperor, it signals its displeasure by raining down disasters such as floods, plagues, and swarms of locusts. The philosopher Mencius said a ruler could lose his “mandate of heaven” if he neglected his responsibility to care for the ordinary people.

[...]

“The novel coronavirus has exposed flaws in Xi’s autocracy: the control on information, the absence of civil society and the lack of transparency have all had human costs,” said Natasha Kassam, a former Australian diplomat in China who is now at the Lowy Institute, a Sydney think tank. “But rather than prompt a rethink in Beijing, Xi and China’s leaders are more likely to double down on the most repressive elements of the regime.”

A few theories:

- Reinstall a sense of fear and panic in the world. It worked so well the first time they did it, seems obvious, as the fear is lifting, they would try to rekindle it. It's awfully similar to the BS they presented out of Wuhan. And we now know that was all smoke and mirrors.

- Further erosion of our supply chain. I have no doubt the current supply chain issues are an intentional part of their plan. This is really gonna make the situation worse and they will be able to blame covid as usual. Just seems a bit odd that China would do this to help implement the crisis, like self sabotage. It is bound to have major negative affects on their own economy. Of all things we will learn to move away from any reliance on China.

One thing I am sure of, it isn't actually about the virus.

I think your second theory is spot on. The funny thing about this is that people really think there is some grand plan here -- or some ACTUAL reason Xi is doing this. But there isn't -- Westerners do not understand Asian Face-Saving culture.

The simplest and most direct explanation of "why" is this: Xi Wants To Save Face.

He said there would be zero Covid. Therefore he CANNOT stop all the zero Covid lockdowns and plans otherwise it would make him lose face. It would force him to admit he was wrong or that he can't control it.

In Asia -- especially China -- it doesn't matter if EVERYBODY knows you are wrong. It doesn't matter if EVERYBODY knows what the truth is. What's more important is simply not admitting that you were wrong or what the truth is.

I have lived in Thailand since 2016 in Chiang Mai -- pretty much the most popular tourist spot for Chinese in the world. So there's a big mix of Southeast Asia and Mainland Chinese here.

I've seen it time and time again. For example, a 25-year-old programmer trying to teach a 45-year-old employee about a new software.

It's rude to "talk down" to someone older than you, as if you know more than them. It can make them lose face. And as I've pointed out -- losing face is the worst possible thing that could ever happen to you.

So to teach the 45-year-old employee, the younger, more knowledgeable man had to do it like this:

"I know you understand this already, but I'm having a hard time figuring this out. So first I open this menu, and then click this option, right?"

And the 45-year-old guy would say "Yes, that's right."

In other words, the 25-year-old had to teach the 45-year-old about the software in a way that made it SOUND like the 45-year-old was actually teaching him.

That's how extremely absurd the face saving culture is here. And that's all you're witnessing.
