I don't know much about the region and I'm horrified by everything happening there, but this:

"But against unarmed civilians, hammers and knives will do just fine."

sent a shudder down my spine -- and not because of what's going on in the Middle East.

I’ve lived close to a Temple or a Synagogue 3 of my 4 decades on Earth. As I write this there is a Temple less than half a mile from my house, and a poorly secured really sketchy child “immigrant holding facility” for “minors age 14-17” across the street from the Temple (once the American Hebrew Academy). The Synagogue I grew up near is about 2 miles away. I’m Christian, not Jewish, but have known this conflict my whole life through friends, but looking in from the outside.

I have only 3 thoughts

1 - I hope Israel destroys Hamas and Gaza is obliterated. I am heartbroken for the innocents in Gaza, but Hamas did this to them, not Israel. The people of Gaza elected terrorists. Israel didn’t ask for this. Hamas did. It’s a terrible result, but one Hamas insisted on.

2 - I have zero conservative Jewish friends or acquaintances. They are ALL very far left. They are part of the crowd who for 7 years has accused folks like me, parents, conservatives, MAGA, and Christians of associating with “Nazis” or being one. I would never say it out loud now - there is too much pain. But I hope they notice it was Biden that lifted sanction on Iran and their fellow leftists taking to the streets of NYC, SF, Atlanta, DC, and Florida to “stand in solidarity” with the vile terrorist thugs whose goal it is to murder all Jews. I hope they stop voting for these morons.

3 - We can and should pray for peace..... so long as we acknowledge the Nazis didn’t end the Holocaust. It ended when American and Soviet soldiers ended the Nazi regime. Hamas will not lay down arms or stop murdering Jews. This will only stop when Hamas is exterminated.

I’m Jewish and not a leftist. I occupy a lonely political island. The only explanation I have is that secular Jews fail to acknowledge what is right under their noses. Leftism is the strongest religion of all.

Can you come visit NC? Maybe attend a couple services? I like Dave Rubin, Rebel News, Ben Shapiro - long list. My neighbors think those folks, like all conservatives, are some kind of far right extremists. 🤦‍♀️ no idea why they are fine being friends with us and other conservatives, but they can’t handle Jewish people with similar values...... though I don’t think they’ve met any in person. 🥴

I had these conversations before the last few elections - why are you voting for people who hate you??? The answers were often empty identity/ oppression ideology nonsense - along with a faux belief no one on the far left actually hates Jews (when plainly many do). Sadly I have a feeling this may wake many up. Sad because much of the terrible stuff that’s happened the last few years was predictable to many of us - at least as it relates to US policy domestic and foreign. Biden was always going much worse repeat of Obama’s worst policies.

It’s possible the election was rigged, far from impossible, though it would seem more likely Fatah - having been in power - would have more easily rigged the election for themselves not against themselves. It’s sad for the innocent. There are many. There are also many large crowds in the street of Gaza overjoyed by the mutilation of innocent Jews. To the extent Gaza is an “outdoor prison” it is Hamas who is making it a jail. The Arab world uses the Palestinians as political pawns which is also sad. They don’t take them in. Egypt bombs tunnels and keeps the border with Gaza sealed all the time. The fact remains Israel is the only country on Earth urged to show “restraint” or attacked for defending themselves. It’s a tale 3,000 years old.

I just figured out from your post that we were neighbors (we recently moved to Raleigh, but I’m back “home” once a week) and that we might even know each other “in real life”. I lived within walking distance of that temple and the now “immigrant processing center.”

Yes, all but one family of Jews that we know are hard core lefties. I even asked one (former) friend why this is. She replied something to the effect that Democrats believed in helping people and were kind, moral voters. Wha?

There is also a large Palestinian population in the city of which you speak, most of whom are Christians. They are all rallying around Hamas. Again, the disbelief. Can’t we want good things for Palestinian people without supporting a full blown terrorist organization?

I’m also amazed at the apathy with which most Americans are viewing this situation unfold. Do they think this will not have global impact? Do they not consider the open border issue we face could result in a similar situation?

We may know each other in real life. 😊 Yes - it’s a very left leaning community.

After realizing I was actually going to need to have this conversation because of the nutty leftism here, I spent some time yesterday preparing my 12-year old daughter for some antisemitic tropes she might hear out of other non-Jewish friends at a bat mitzvah party for a Jewish friend coming up. Most of the girls going are woke (including the girl being celebrated). We went through everything - the Nazi regime didn’t “negotiate” to stop killing Jews, it’s not really a “cycle” when one side is constantly starting it, we can pray for the innocent Palestinians without ignoring Hamas did this, Israel left Gaza in 2005. No the Jews didn’t violently remove the Arabs during Zionism in the late 1800’s - they mostly bought the land. Borders and people around the world were displaced after WWI and WWII. Palestine pre-WWI was a region in the Ottoman Empire, not a country. Actually scale of violence does matter. Egypt seals the border and blows up tunnels to Gaza and no one complains. It’s hard to argue there is a group more indigenous to Israel than the Jews. I basically reviewed all the idiotic narratives to “justify” or whitewash that Hamas is nothing more than a Jew hating group of terrorists and was pleasantly reminded my 12 year old knows actual history. She’s read about 900 books with a heavy focus on historical ones and she knows far more about the Bible than me (my kids go to a large private Christian school 20 minutes away).

Anyway, we finish talking and I ask her if she had any more questions. She said “Do you think [friend] and her parents will be less into the nutty woke stuff after this?” I wish I knew the answer.

I doubt this is true, for one reason. Netanyahu knows his history, and remembers the notion that knowing in advance, having been warned by a third party, was Golda Meir's downfall in 1973. It would by cynical and callous beyond the pale, and politically stupid, for him to have similarly "known in advance" what was going to happen and sat on his hands and did nothing. You can't depend on government to protect you because government has no duty to protect you:

https://simulationcommander.substack.com/p/police-arent-there-to-protect-you

Warren and Taliaferro snuck back inside and phoned police again, who assured them officers were on the way. But no officers ever came, and when Morse and Kent figured out that Warren and Taliaferro were in the house, the men forced all three women back to Marvin Kent’s apartment. There, the women were robbed, raped, and beaten for FOURTEEN HOURS.

Yet when the women sued the city, the court ruled "the duty to provide public services is owed to the public at large, and, absent a special relationship between the police and an individual, no specific legal duty exists". Calling the police — twice — and informing them of a crime in progress wasn’t enough to create “a special relationship between the police and an individual” (more on that later), and therefore police had no duty to intervene.

Biden's spokesman John Kirby was on TV today yammering about climate change being the biggest "existential" threat we face. While Hamas has no nuclear capability, its main sponsor, Iran, either has that capacity or is very close to developing it. We are now on the verge of war on two fronts, but our Moron in Chief's people still babbles on about climate change. Biden himself read a speech the other day and then fled the room with reporters yelling questions about the Mid-East. Today, Brandon called a "lid" at 10:00 AM. The lack of leadership is astounding.

Biden’s Chief Handler - a/k/a Barack Hussein Obama - has repeatedly proclaimed that global warming caused by fossil fuels presents an “existential crisis.” But in 2022 he obtained a permit from the Edgartown Town Board to install three propane (a fossil fuel) tanks, with a total capacity of a whopping 2,500 gallons, on his 25-acre Martha’s Vineyard estate.

Apparently he does not want to rely on so-called “clean” energy sources (e.g., wind, solar, batteries) - understandably so, because those sources are intermittent and unreliable. But he, and others of his kind, want to force us deplorables to rely on those sources.

We need to stop viewing these global-warming/“green energy” hypocrites and authoritarians as fellow Americans, and start viewing them as the dangerous vermin that they are.

That was ironic since so many people told me how dangerous Israel would be, and the next thing you know, I’m looking at folks from my hometown on the cover of the Jerusalem Post.

I went again a year and a half later, and more recently last year.

I don’t know if most people understand what a beautiful country it is! I always tell people if they ever get a chance to go they should. I’m a Christian and I’ve gone on my friend Amir’s tours (Behold Israel).

Nearly 25 years ago, he stayed at my home. I remember he pulled out his computer and showed me images of Palestinian children being taught at the age of two or three to “chew the Jews up and spit them out.” I imagine some of these who did these hideous acts might have been one of the ones I saw on the screen.

I love to read Dennis Prager’s Rational Bible books to understand how Jewish people interpret the same scriptures I read. I love the Jewish people and pray for them often.

I have not stopped watching the television since Saturday morning. I am constantly sharing information with my friends on social media.

As I go about my day, I ask people what they think about what happened and I am stunned to learn many don’t know about it. Today a lady told me she liked being “fat stupid and happy.” I said that sounds nice, but it’s coming to America.

I think you are reading this incorrectly. How did the Hamas fighters enter unimpeded? Why was the fence not defended that morning? Why did Israel's intelligence, second to none in this world, not know this was coming? Why would Hamas wage this kind of attack knowing that the retaliation would be immediate and come in ten-fold upon the Palestinians? Ex-IDF personnel are expressing their incredulousness at how this played out and that their media are not asking the obvious questions.

The fence that was breached was only partially defended according to mainstream sources. They are calling it an unfortunate miscalculation to have sent defensive forces to the West Bank earlier. This is how Hamas' "success" is explained to the world.

So, an Islamic terrorist group was apparently aware of this deployment, or coincidentally picked the right day to launch an incursion against one of the best trained and equipped ground force in the area using a massive volley of rockets that were somehow locked and loaded unbeknownst to Israeli surveillance from the air or on the ground (I assume we all realize that the IDF has operatives on both sides of the fence).

They then attacked with hammers, knives and hang gliders, but surprisingly no box-cutters.

"It's Israel's 9/11!!".

Indeed it is...

You don't think BB and the war hawks that surround him are aching for a war with Iran, the only real threat to Israel in the area and a country that supports Hamas? What would be the best way to garner support for this lunacy?

This was a planned event. The lack of any real questions by the media confirms this.

Strange ending to your commentary here. But also, to your point about hammers and knives, I get it, but don't understand why you left out the number of Hamas soldiers who were driving around in pickup trucks with automatic weapons mounted in the trucks' beds, firing at will. Also, you may not have intended it, but you make it sound like you are minimizing what happened when you say this was "not an invasion in any conventional sense." Hamas is the governmental body in Gaza, having obtained power in a coup. They make no claim minimizing that governmental body's involvement in this military incursion (i.e., an act of war planned and executed by Hamas, the governing body) - in fact they are proud of what they have done. Drone strikes were also used by Hamas this time around, and the usual rocket barrages were significantly increased this time so as to overwhelm Iron Dome, and that part succeeded as well. Sounds like conventional warfare to me. Guerilla warfare, certainly, but conventional just the same.

Most people out there are saying, accurately, that this event was worse than our 9/11. But I am in the camp that would rather use the analogy of Pearl Harbor. They suffered a sneak attack, and their enemy, no matter how poorly suited to the task, aims to put an end to Israel, and to kill every Jew in that land. It is plainly stated in their charter, in black and white. It is their raison d'etre.

You at least are clear-eyed enough to mention parenthetically the risk of a nuclear strike on Tel Aviv. You're right that such is beyond Hamas' capabilities, but soon it will not be beyond Iran's capabilities. Maybe 25 years ago, my Dad was at a coctail party amongst his friends & acquaintences in the cardiological field in our home town, many of whom were so-called progressive Jews that really had disdain for the hawkish government in Israel at the time, and were saying so at the cocktail party. My Dad couldn't resist and said to them, "ok I guess, but you know, if Iran gets the bomb, Israel is finished." You perhaps can imagine the stunned looks on their faces in the wake of that very obvious truth.

The slow rapproachment you mention is already shattered by this act of war, by Hamas, not by Israel's response, no matter how they choose to respond. War is at hand, whether any of us like it or not.

First of all, Hamas fighters are very well trained, just as are Hezbollah fighters, who have the added benefit of battle experience in Syria. The Arabs who slaughtered 265 Jews at a rave in the desert were 16-17 yr old kids, given rifles and Jeep's.

We haven't been in Gaza since 2005. The so-called siege didn't begin until days after evacuating Gaza rockets started landing in Israel from Gaza.

As an IDF combat vet, I will say there is only one solution, and that will be to completely destroy Hamas. Unfortunately that necessitates boots on the ground. There will be many many IDF deaths in that scenario, but there is now zero choice.

Imagine, for all of you thinking Hamas was justified, that the Jews of WWII Europe were able to fight back against the Nazis in any sort of coordinated way. Does ANYONE think that Jews, in order to fight their enemies, would resort to taking families out of their homes, raping the women, killing kids in front of their parents, raping them mutilating the bodies.
