I am 80 years old. I find the hysteria over measles and chicken pox puzzling. I had both. Actually, there were two or three things that were called "measles". I had them all. I remember all of them being a good excuse not to go to school a few days. No recollection of being seriously ill, everyone I knew had the measles/mumps/chickenpox and none of them had any difficulties, as far as I know.

I DO remember the chicken pox. I was the oldest of five; the first to get it. Almost instantly, the other four got it from me (presumably). One sister had a smallish scar on her face from the chicken pox. My mother was very upset; of course it was my fault. Today, she is in her 70's. That scar has long been unnoticeable.

It was considered important that males got the mumps prior to puberty--it was supposed to be a risk for sterility after puberty. My Dad actually got mumps from us--apparently he hadn't got it as a child. There are some pictures of him unhappily looking like a chipmunk. His family was complete at that point, don't know about the sterility part.

That could be my story. Same thing....,myself and two siblings were all infected at the same time and other than making my Mother miserable.....we survived. My Father also caught the mumps from us and we did have a little brother about 7 years later.

Wholly agree on the miserable mother part. SHE recalled in detail when we got these "childhood diseases"; she had a houseful of sick kids.

She took things seriously. If you got sick, you were locked down for at least a week, minimum. She was convinced that "relapses" were the danger. She wouldn't feed you for a couple days--primarily to limit vomit clean up. Then you got limited boiled eggs and toast. Confined to bed. No hypochondriacs in her brood--if you could drag yourself off to school, you did.

Once, she took pity on me. I don't recall what I had, but I was locked up. She got me a bunch of books on Amateur Radio to read. Within a year, I got my Ham license; went on to a PhD in EE.

Great Mom! It is all about money. The schools are afraid of losing all those federal dollars if the school has a major outbreak. When we were coming down with those pesky viruses.....the schools were still controlled by the state. Too bad that is not the case today.

My recollection was that after a couple days on water only, ANYTHING tasted wonderful. Usually, you were pretty much recovered--but those "relapses" were certainly lurking. I can still remember how delicious that couple boiled eggs and a piece of dry toast was.

I think we would get some hot tea the first couple days. We lived out in the desert and our water was horrible. From the Colorado, which at that point was pretty much a swamp, over chlorinated beyond comprehension. My mother had contracted typhoid earlier and nearly died; she was understandably paranoid about water. The chlorinator was turned up to max. We drank a lot of tea--made the water somewhat palatable.

Shoot when I was growing up we had chicken pox "parties" just to get over with quickly in the neighborhood

In 1956-57, my mother took my younger brother and me next door to visit cousins (they always caught diseases before our household for some reason)so we could get infected, too. We all endured together. The good old days😊

Same here, I’m 73 and got all those childhood diseases in Cuba. When we came in 1960 I had all of them already. In fact in Cuba when my mother heard of a child with one of those ‘diseases’ she would take my brother and me over to get it and be done with it.

I'm almost CERTAIN my son had mumps when he turned 1 in 2002. Cheeks as big as chipmunks. Back then I was a naive mom. I took him to the dr and they just said he had an infection in his parotids. Hell if they would test for mumps. I am certain now he had no need one of the "M's" of the MMR when he turned 18 months.

Some of these "childhood diseases" were so mild in young children that it wasn't certain that they actually had them. I recall that when we had that chickenpox plague, my youngest brother was about two. Not sure he had them.

A good thing to Google is the Brady Bunch measles episode. All 6 Brady kids had measles at once. They played board games and ate ice cream and it was classic Brady Bunch. This was in the 1970s.

What has happened to us?

A few years ago, I got an episode of shingles--which is a recurrence of chicken pox. The MD told me I was potentially contagious. I was living with my youngest son and family at the time. His children were less than ten. I told him that I would isolate. His comment: "Don't bother. If they get it, they will be fine. Just don't tell my wife---she will freak out."

BTW, the British NHS doesn't routinely vaccinate for chicken pox. They DO vaccinate when indicated--a person out of childhood that hasn't had chicken pox, or someone with a condition that might make it dangerous. Their rationale is that adults, exposed to children with chicken pox, contract a very mild case--they don't even know they have it. But that mild case acts as a natural "booster" which lessens the likelihood of developing shingles. They think widespread vaccination makes shingles more of a problem in older people.

I don't know; I am an Engineer, not a virologist. But, I don't write them off as crazy.

As a kid, I only got the mumps. I caught chicken pox as an adult from my son. It was no big deal. Never did get the measles even though I was growing up in the 1950s.

You might have Mark. While the medical system maintains that 100% of people got measles spots and symptoms that is just not true. I never got measles spots and symptoms either, but when my children got them, I didn't... there is now a recognition in the medical literature that measles can be subclinical with no symptoms and resultant immunity.

It's the same with polio, chickenpox and hepatitis B. Polio has a 99.98% subclinical infection immunity rate and chickenpox and Hepatitis B both have a 60% subclinical infection immunity rate.

Every day we pick up potential pathogens and simply develop immunity to them.

Yes, I think that is true. Other times I have felt ill for a few hours and then it all went away. That’s what happened to me with Omicron. Stuffy nose for 3 hours that went away and didn’t come back. My famously healthy assistant (15 years and not one sick day!) had exactly the same experience.

I'm 74, and my experience was similar. Everyone expected to get measles, chicken pox, mumps possibly. What kids were frightened of was polio, and we were bombarded with photos of people in iron lungs, and I remember what a horrifying prospect that was. I just read an article about a man who just died at 78, and he had spent 70 years in an iron lung. His attitude towards life and his accomplishments were stunning: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/texas-man-who-lived-70-years-iron-lung-dies-78-never-gave-up-180979008/

Part of the problem is that kids are no longer allowed to go outside and play in the dirt. Run around, work up a good sweat, get in fights. Roll around in the grass with the bugs and worms. All that builds resistance to disease but if you try to tell that to a modern daughter in law she’d never let you near your grandchildren.

Thank you for shining a light on the green card mandate! The government doesn't just require the COVID vax to apply for a green card, they require a recent booster as well, anyone with an original series from years ago will have to get one!

Also, the mandate extends to babies 6 months old, which also has to be mRNA because Novavax is not available for under-12s.

For a while foreigners who want to enter the U.S. had to get COVID shots to get their VISA approved. While illegal immigrants never had to get COVID shots to enter the U.S. in the same time period. This was never explained or justified.

It is my understanding those alive who had experienced mumps, measles, chicken pox, etc as a child ended up with very healthy and strong immune systems. Believe too experiencing these childhood diseases made it less likely to get cancer as a child. Wouldn’t a child experiencing chicken pox be far less devastating than getting cancer?

Expand full comment

You are absolutely correct. this medical article was a dead give-away. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36634620/ The fact is that the same immunological problems occur with all injectable vaccines, not just respiratory ones. The whooping cough vaccine is one of the worst for creating high levels of IgG4 aberrant immunity... people injected with vaccines have a much lower ability to fight cancer and other disorders because their front line immune system hasn't been "educated" in the way that it did with the infections, and results in something called "original antigenic sin."

Stop the measles fear porn. You're now just as guilty as the pro-Covid vaccine journalists. I had it as a kid...no big deal. As did all my siblings. While I do get and appreciate your point about the hypocrisy of it all, you really need to do some research on these childhood sicknesses. And do your research with someone who really knows the data and reality, not with the fear mongering physicians or big pharma. Please. You seem stubbornly opposed to learning more about the sham of childhood vaccines for these formerly common sicknesses. Oh, and in Minnesota where I'm from, they've made a huge deal every time it happens about the unvaccinated Somali immigrant population getting and spreading measles. Except that it happened, the kids got sick, the kids got better, and everything was FINE. But we never hear that part of the story. I appreciate your reporting, but I wish you would wake up to the childhood vaccination scam. Read ONE book by the other side, ok? I recommend "Turtles All The Way Down: vaccine science and myth" to start your primary education.
