Looking for the root causes of the present problem, I see politicians, political parties, laws and judges, in that order - and, of course, all are intertwined.

You are right. This is called situational awareness. There are places you simply do not go as a vulnerable person, a woman, the elderly. She should have been safe on a train with other people. As a society we are not taught to be looking for someone who might hurt us. We look back to a time in a small town or neighborhood where everyone knows each other, but this is no longer the case. The police know who the troublemakers are and make arrests, but criminals are set free with no bond or plea deals, or the idea that they are too young to face justice. Too many people are glued to their phone. Learn to position yourself where you can see the room, look for exits, be prepared to protect yourself or escape. Also we must demand that officials and judges recognize the mentally ill and criminals are dangerous and should not be allowed to walk free among us. There were definite warning signs with this man. I do not agree with not reporting this and Charlotte officials suppressed it for 2 weeks. This made it more of an issue. People need to be aware of the problem in order to demand change. And then the left tries to ignore the story for two reasons - one is that they don't want to give oxygen to the complaint that leftists are soft on crime, the second is that the killer is black and the victim is white.

The state is red but the city is blue as over 25% of the residents are black. Every day, I mean EVERY DAY we wake up to at least another shooting on the east side, west side all around the town and it's invariably black on black crime. It's never in the adjoining suburbs. It isn't due to poverty or homelessness as those exist else wear too. It's a culture of drugs, fatherless homes, gangs, and crime. More money and behavioral health specialists won't help. We need more people off the streets and more prisons to house them forever.
Even in bloody Chicago, most of the violence isn't random, it's a gang war. The sort of random crime is, as you note, almost always caused by mental illness, and in this case, the victim choice was apparently racially motivated.
Fortunately, our governor and state government plans to fire our local sweetheart-deal prosecutor and replace him with a prosecutor for each of the nine townships. (I presume you're in Indianapolis.) It is in youth they are most dangerous and any violent crime committed in youth should merit a very long prison sentence or an execution. That ensures that the public will be relatively safe from these criminals while they are most dangerous. The North Carolina murder is a sterling example of bad policy. The murderer should have been behind solid bars many years ago and stayed there. Delve into these sorts of crimes and the pattern repeats: a man who showed criminal tendencies for years and even committed a number of crimes remains unincarcerated and free to commit mayhem against the public.

You are right. This is called situational awareness. There are places you simply do not go as a vulnerable person, a woman, the elderly. She should have been safe on a train with other people. As a society we are not taught to be looking for someone who might hurt us. We look back to a time in a small town or neighborhood where everyone knows each other, but this is no longer the case. The police know who the troublemakers are and make arrests, but criminals are set free with no bond or plea deals, or the idea that they are too young to face justice. Too many people are glued to their phone. Learn to position yourself where you can see the room, look for exits, be prepared to protect yourself or escape. Also we must demand that officials and judges recognize the mentally ill and criminals are dangerous and should not be allowed to walk free among us. There were definite warning signs with this man. I do not agree with not reporting this and Charlotte officials suppressed it for 2 weeks. This made it more of an issue. People need to be aware of the problem in order to demand change. There have been too many young women murdered - jogging (Lakin Riley, Mollie Tibbetts, Rachel Morin and others) sleeping in a bed (see Logan Frederico, Columbia, SC. shot by a man with 40 prior charges).

What the "right" is saying is that criminals like this should not be on the streets. And then the left tries to ignore the story for two reasons - one is that they don't want to give oxygen to the complaint that leftists are soft on crime, the second is that the killer is black and the victim is white.
Then the right calls out the fact that the left is ignoring the story, and points out the fact that if the races were reversed it would be a George Floyd-like outrage in the media.

If we don’t say the facts of the matter because it’s not nice or might inflame, we aren’t helping matters. What’s infuriating is that we’re not supposed to say the truth, but in the meantime we’re hearing lies from the liberals, and we can’t reply even to set matters straight. And when we don’t reply, the bullying left gets worse.
If some people were to get inflamed and become racist in hearing the truth of this matter, and to prevent this we say nothing, it’s only going to be worse when the truth eventually comes out.
This tactic of not doing x (a neutral thing, like saying the truth) so that y doesn’t happen (a bad thing, but not a certain thing), is the kind of thinking liberals do. And they think in a messed up way.
Some of my friends were so bad and brought up racism all the time. I snapped at one twice to say she was wrong in calling something racist, and at the other once to tell her there was no systemic racism, and neither ever said another word.
One might see also: non-white grooming gangs in the UK. I learned recently that the UK govt had about 50 Bureaucrats whose job it was to suppress negative reporting on Muslims. Everything about today's commentary is excellent but I'm not sure why you felt you had to put the very last sentence in. Instead of using the word 'right", why can't you just say our mainstream Media, or our government, or reasonable people living in this country? This does not need to be a right/left issue. The more we remove the politics of this, I think the better off we are at leaning into how to fix this problem. And we really need to let women know it is not safe to get on a train by yourself, look down the whole time at your phone and not be acutely aware of your surroundings. It is not this woman's fault that she got killed, but she should have stayed standing with her back to a door and a clear view of everybody on that train. She also should have had a can of mace or pepper spray in her hands not a phone.

Fatherless boys, children having children since Johnson's Great Society that paid women to have children outside of marriage leading to the destruction of the family, particularly the black family, are at the root of this problem. At the same time there is historical evidence that “playing by the rules” did not guarantee that black family life and culture pre 1960s would be allowed to thrive. For instance, That whole majority black town in Oklahoma which was very prosperous but was destroyed by racist Vigilantes, in the 1920s if I recall correctly.

Thank you Alex for writing what everyone knows but is afraid to say even though the statistics don't lie. I live in a major city. The state is red but the city is blue as over 25% of the residents are black. Every day, I mean EVERY DAY we wake up to at least another shooting on the east side, west side all around the town and it's invariably black on black crime. It's never in the adjoining suburbs. It isn't due to poverty or homelessness as those exist else wear too. It's a culture of drugs, fatherless homes, gangs, and crime. More money and behavioral health specialists won't help. We need more people off the streets and more prisons to house them forever.
Even in bloody Chicago, most of the violence isn't random, it's a gang war. The sort of random crime is, as you note, almost always caused by mental illness, and in this case, the victim choice was apparently racially motivated.
Fortunately, our governor and state government plans to fire our local sweetheart-deal prosecutor and replace him with a prosecutor for each of the nine townships. (I presume you're in Indianapolis.) That seems to be what it's going to take--top-down leadership where woke local authorities have failed.

Exactly. How can society and specifically, the Black community, address a problem when it is not acknowledged? Denying uncomfortable facts does not help the victim or perpetrator.
Criminals are mostly unreformable. They show anti-social and criminal tendencies early in life and for most of them, this pattern is life-long. They commit violent crime less frequently as they age but continue to commit non-violent crimes even in older years. It is an almost ineradicable pattern of thinking. The legal approach of leniency to criminal youths is mistaken. It is in youth they are most dangerous and any violent crime committed in youth should merit a very long prison sentence or an execution. That ensures that the public will be relatively safe from these criminals while they are most dangerous. The North Carolina murder is a sterling example of bad policy. The murderer should have been behind solid bars many years ago and stayed there. Delve into these sorts of crimes and the pattern repeats: a man who showed criminal tendencies for years and even committed a number of crimes remains unincarcerated and free to commit mayhem against the public.
