I agree. I owned a profitable free community newspaper (1996-2019) and the Facebook/Google handwriting was on the wall. I assumed Bezos bought WAPO as a vanity project, or to use it to browbeat D.C. politicians who stood in the way of Amazon. While it became just another big-city leftist scandal sheet for fellow travelers, it is odd that Bezos took so long to get serious about the books.
My dad was a newspaper man, so I'm not cheering. And the Post used to be a pretty good paper 25 years ago. But I can appreciate the irony that the people who caused this are on the left. Conservatives like me left the Post gradually over the years, as it consolidated itself into a propaganda machine for the Democratic party. But the revolution always eats its own, and I've been watching my lefty neighbors in Fairfax County, Virginia turn on the Post for the purported crimes of Bezos in cozying up to the Trump administration. The Post ran into the same problem that CNN did once it became overwhelmingly left. More conservative readers/viewer largely abandoned them. When CNN and Wapo tried to pivot back to more balanced coverage, progressives began to leave also. The result was declining viewers and readers that are too small in number to sustain a business.
I am one of those glad to see the demise of the Post. I will never forget, as I have written before, in 1970 attending a Senate hearing at the SOB as an Interior Department intern. I took copious notes. Returning to the Interior Building the next day I purchased a Post. I sat down at my miniscule desk in the corner of another person's office, opened the Post and read the summary of the hearing I attended the day before. I could only gasp at the summary's dissimilarity to the notes from the hearing I attended the day before. At the Post, journalism was dead in 1970!!
Would love to provide but 56 years have passed and my papers have long disappeared. Also, back then the hearings were filmed with cameras that needed the bright lights that were attached to the cameras. As soon as the lights were turned of and the news people left the hearing, the senators also left and turned the hearing over to their staff. Do I hear Photo Op?
