Germany has always had laws against Holocaust denialism, but authorities now go much further. Europe's largest country has effectively criminalized many right-wing views. Eugyppius explains.
Eugyppius is excellent and I am a subscriber, but I think he misses one issue. He tends to simply expose how idiotic and incompetent German politicians are. But in the free speech area, although the German political class seems to genuinely believe that mild criticism of illegal immigration is hateful and harmful to national unity (?) or something..comity (?).
But ALSO this type of censorship BENEFITS those in power. Because, surprise, surprise, pretty much everything they censor happens to be criticisms of THEIR policies! They allow mass immigration- so you can't criticize it, or you are being hateful. They have crazy covid restrictions- you can't criticize that either, etc.
So as always censorship is used to support those in power. If you want to say hateful things about Donald Trump, or Putin's Russian, that will not get you in troubel.
If the German criminal code allows for enhanced penalties for insulting politicians you raise an interesting point about foreign politicians. Is it just German politicians who you can’t insult but insulting Donald Trump is fine?
Yes its fine. One of the leading magazines showed Trump with a swastika on his T shirt. If any German ever uses the swastika symbol to compare anything to Nazism, its automatically big trouble, fines, court cases.
This is why i like AB. He knows solutions come from debate and reasonable compromise, and recognize an intelligent thought process irrespective of whether he agrees.
For example i think its great that I disagree roughly 15% with both AB and Eugyppius on issues. That's healthy. We need to get back there.
That's really refreshing to me.
And I have to say, AB is right; Eugyppius is intellectually gifted, deep thinking writer, and just as important he has good old fashion horse sense.
We all come from a different time when people could agree to disagree, but still be respective of others' ability and desire to lead their own lives. Now people insist on a certain (their) way of thinking, and try to force you to oblige. Let's call that for what it is: class warfare ("we know better than you, how to speak and think"). I subscribe to both of these gentlemen because I find them to be very thoughtful people...
Absolutely. Over the years (based on what I've seen), I've become less and less accommodating to those people. Especially once they started coming for my kids..
Absolutely yes! And I like to read thoughtful (that are not over emotional and idiotic) viewpoints that are either different from my own or which shed new light on a subject that I hadn't previously considered.
Euggypius is great. The Stasi are back in charge in Germany. Europe is destroying itself with mass migration and ESG, any citizens who disagree will be thrown in the gulag.
The word burning democrats in the US fully support the Eurozone ban on words and phrases that are critical of the castratti in power. It’s acceptable to bash Christianity, but not Islam. If multiple trans shooters gun down kids, don’t you dare bad mouth the trans community. If a Trump supporter brushes past a capitol police officer on Jan 6, he gets 4 years in jail. But if an unstable blue haired Karen assaults an ICE officer arresting an illegal alien child predator, she becomes a leftist hero.
No civilization can survive this insane double standard. And just a note to you leftist word burners; it’s not too late to change your behavior. Otherwise, you’re likely to end up taking your own life in your bunker.
Not everyone. The left tend to be top-down people. They wait to be told how to think, what to say, how to vote, what to do. The right tends to be more self-aware and self-starting, but they aren't motivated to drive others' lives the way the left is. In Europe, the "right" is what we would call the center here. The "far right" is what we would call "center right".
Nah, MOST got on their knees and submitted. You and I are true exceptions, well, if you genuinely did take a stand.
40% are sociopaths beholden to leftist narratives of decay destruction and death, and ALLEGEDLY 40% are Conservatives who take a stand to promote these alleged concepts of Freedom Independence Autonomy and Choice, but, did we see 40% stand up to this leftist tyranny?
NO. Conservatives are inherently Cowards, and boy is that evident with what Federal resent-tation these days…
I agree. I did make a stand, as my business was practically destroyed during covid. The trouble is that most people are also busy with their lives, and they tend not to show up. Sooner or later, people will make their opinions known in one way or another...
Where is America today had COUP-MALA been placed into the WH or say Elon never bought Twitter? Nov 5th must never be taken for granted in the USA as we MUST stay ever vigilant with the commie-globalists knocking on the door! We KNOW who they are and we must NEVER let them bring GERMANY or the UK to AMERICA! As a man once said in a Butler PA July 24...FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!
One of the best critical journalists that Germany has is Boris Reitschuster - he lives abroad now as German authorities bullied him like pressuring banks to close his bank accounts.
He just wrote an article about a pianist called Arne Schmitt who is in prison right now following this incident:
"According to current information, Schmitt wanted to file a criminal complaint against one of the lay judges. For that, he needed the judge's name. It was not given to him. As a result, Schmitt followed the judge on the street in Berlin—at the edge of one of his many trials, which have also financially ruined him (apparently another goal of the state authorities)—in an attempt to get him to reveal his name."
Some background on the pianist:
"During the protests against the COVID measures, Schmitt gained notoriety among 'Corona heretics' like me with his grand piano. Eventually, the police confiscated his piano. For years, the authorities kept Schmitt occupied with investigations and legal proceedings."
I also read and follow his writings. He is spot on about the insanity gripping Europe. The leaders of Europe are intent on turning it into a hell hole. We need to re think our commitment to them if they continue down this path. Trump is right, it’s time to bring our boys home WW II has been over for 80 years and we have funded their defense that entire time and we have kept our market open to them while they keep our products locked out with tariffs and other non financial limitations. If we are not going to make them the 51st state we have no business being there.
I’m curious why it’s against the law to deny the Holocaust. That’s like saying it’s agains the law to deny the Covid narrative.
Everyone of us here denies the Covid narrative, so imagine if we’d have to pay those fines for simply holding opposite views.
The Holocaust did happen, just like the pandemic did happen— but did a virus kill millions or was it the Covid policies, just like did six million die and was it due to torture as told?
We must continually question everything and sad that it’s law to actually do so.
IF the neo Marxist DEMS had their way here in America those fines would absolutely have been implemented or lawfare against targeted citizens at the very least making the process the punishment
The Nazi party actually documented a lot of it. Especially the conference at Wannsee. Apparently there was a lot of opposition to the "final solution" being proposed. To answer your question though, the reason it's against the law to deny the Holocaust is because this is Germany's original sin (much like how slavery is the original sin in the USA, and school abuse is the original sin in Canada). If you challenge that, their whole narrative falls apart. Germany (like most of Europe) is currently committing suicide. I don't get it. I'm from a generation when we were taught to question authority. Now they question the questioners because they don't have answers.
In "Through The Looking Glass" by Lewis Carroll, there is a curious discussion between Alice and Humpty Dumpty that is worth meditating on given the sad state of free expression in Germany. HD uses a word in one way and then contradicts himself by using the same word in opposition to what was previously spoken. As he explains it "When I use a word, it means just what I choose it to mean--neither more nor less." When he does this, Alice says the question is whether you can make words mean so many things but HD replies that "The question is which is to be the master--that's all." Of course Lewis Carroll wrote "Through The Looking Glass" as a cautionary tale for parents about how not to educate one's children. Germany's political establishment appears not to have learned the lesson reflected in that book by converting ordinary language into manifestations of criminal intent.
Ok. So agree with underlying philosophy, understanding of and regard for freedom of speech. Important. But Alex. Can you stop with the KAREN nonsense? It is irrational and not a nerdy/smart way of making a point anymore. Really. geeeezzz
It’s western leftism run amok. We all know American progressives would arrest anyone’s ass in two seconds if they could for saying there are only two sexes, MRNA vax should be questioned, unbridled immigration isn’t good, Pocahontas and on it goes… The western progressive mind hates anyone who speaks out against them or disagrees. One can honestly say Hitler is much closer aligned to progressive ideology than conservative - state control, abortion beyond birth, don’t criticize government, hate anything related to Jews and on it goes. Two peas in the pod……
60 minutes actually did a story on this German crackdown on speech and they went along with the 6am raids. They then spoke with the German prosecutors who were more than giddy to wake these people up and take their laptops and phones. The one had a quote that he was happy to have to make the person actually go to the bank to get money to pay the fine as “we have their phones”. It was creepy as hell especially when said in German with a smile.

I found it interesting- the AfD's* areas of highest support are in the former East Germany.

Germany has come full circle from the 1930s will the people do the same and just accept it with the same dreadful consequences?
You think this is an appropriate analogy?
Covid has updated what happens when you yell “fire!“ In a crowded room…
Everyone just sits down and waits to be told what to do next…

What did they say about opinions, they’re like @$$holes, but you don’t necessarily want to hear them…

I expect if they regain total power here again we will start to be just like Germany. You see a great example of that in California now.
Must NOT COMPLY

What are you talking about? Israel is our 51st state.
We have no troops stationed in Israel for the last 80 years. Take your Jew hatred somewhere else.
I don’t hate them; I just hate what there’re doing in Gaza and the West Bank (with our aid and support).
I am tired of it now too. We need to leave that forsaken place and let them destroy each other.

The totalitarians ALWAYS have good, sound reasons for censoring. It may merely be not hurting certain peoples' feelings.
Coincidently, the censorship also makes it a crime to say not-nice things about THEM.
Isn't that convenient.
Bonus-they makes THEMSELVES the ones who decide which speech is verboten.
The European continent just doesn’t learn from its past. Tragically it then takes other countries to bail them out.
It’s western leftism run amok. Hey Alex,
Do you support free speech when it’s “anti-semitic” was banning speech of holocaust denialism okay?
“Prosecutors acted with restraint” lol
