They aren’t conscious. They aren’t even particularly intelligent (though sometimes it seems that way). And this is actually some of the problem. It’s a mindless computer program that is being given an interface to work via tools that can impact the real world.

As for the hugging face incident this was not a failure of AI safety, this was basic cybersecurity stuff that wasn’t done right. But I am still skeptical insofar as I believe this was done on purpose. I mean, if they wanted the training environment/sandbox to be secure they could have air gapped the network, they didn’t. Why? Because then they couldn’t brag about their models jail breaking out. In other words, it is far more likely this outcome was at least encouraged if not outright engineered.

I would suggest one more thing—maybe we need to re-evaluate what should and should not be internet connected. Get critical infrastructure off the internet. No reason for it, with or without AI it’s just stupid vulnerability waiting to be exploited (by man or machine).

Alex, i like you and read your posts often. I have to take issue with the idea though that any "global commission" will provide any protection from whatever the consequences of this there are. I would think the pandemic should have taught all of us how incompetent and toothless all of these so called leaders are. Also to say we would never allow people to be killed for economic benefit, i think depends on who you are talking about. The powerful elites do not care in any way who is harmed as long as they feel they can keep themselves and their families prosperous and safe.
